John grew up on a ranch 20 miles from town in Adrian, Oregon with his parents, Bob and Helen Davis, and 4 siblings, Darlene Williams, Larry Davis, Donna Elordi, and Sandy Taylor.

Roping was his first toy of choice, and always a horseback as long as he can remember. He had never been on a bicycle in his life! There was no need and besides you don’t have to peddle a horse.

Rodeo has always been a part of his life. He rode steers and roped in Little Britches and roped and rode cutting horses (Chuck and Doris Tyson’s) in high school. In 1968 he was the Idaho High School Rodeo All Around Champion. He has trained horses since he was about 8 years old. Never rode any bulls until he was 18 years old. In high school he played football and basketball but come spring no baseball, he would go home and rope.

John rode bulls in a rodeo for President Ronald Reagan, won rodeo, went to the White House for dinner. He probably never got on more than 30 head of practice bulls in his life. “My Dad, Bob Davis was a great horseman, he made sure I was always mounted. Riding is riding whether it is horses or bulls. Balance, using the basic fundamentals and studying the game (mental aspect) is the most important.”

John now lives with his family in Adrian, Oregon and raises and trains horses
