Dorris, Don

Class of 2025

Don Dorris, born in 1936 in Missouri but raised in the heart of Idaho’s Treasure Valley, built a life as solid as the homes he helped construct—and just as enduring. A skilled craftsman by trade, Don was laying bricks by age 13 and went on to help shape iconic structures like the Cathedral of the Rockies. But it was his love for rodeo that truly set the foundation for a legacy that still rides strong today.

Don carved out an unforgettable path in the Idaho Cowboys Association, claiming year-end championships in both team roping and tie-down roping throughout the late 1960s and early ’70s. He was crowned ICA All-Around Champion in 1972—making history as the first cowboy to earn that honor using only timed events. He cherished that title, just as he did the many buckles and friendships collected on the rodeo trail across Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada.

More than a champion in the arena, Don was a mentor and spiritual guide to countless young cowboys and cowgirls. He shared his rodeo wisdom and life stories at the Summer Rodeo Bible Camps in Council and Cambridge, where his tales of roping, riding, and faith left lasting marks on generations to come.

A loving husband to Nora, father to three, and the proud patriarch of a growing rodeo family, Don’s legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—all of whom carry his cowboy spirit into and beyond the arena.
