Ewy-Bean, Karen

Class of 2025

Born and raised in Idaho, Karen Ewy-Bean was horseback by age six and never looked back. Her rodeo journey blazed through high school competitions, the Idaho Girls Rodeo Association, and barrel racing jackpots across the state—hauling home countless buckles and saddles.

In 1973, she kicked off her ICA career by claiming Rookie of the Year, and for the next 35 years, Karen gave her all to the sport—whether it was from the saddle or the boardroom. In 1979, she received the Lewis Reiman Buckle for her dedication, and in 2005, alongside her legendary horse Lakota, she was crowned ICA Champion. That same year, Lakota earned Barrel Horse of the Year honors, and again in 2006.

Karen and Lakota were known far and wide—Hailey to Homedale, Riggins to Whitebird—as the picture of consistency, making 10 straight ICA Finals. Rodeo announcer Lonnie Hatch said it best: “If you look up the word ‘consistent’ in the dictionary, you’ll see a picture of the pair.”

Though she retired in 2008, Karen still rides and now cheers on her grandkids in the arena. She and husband Bob Bean hang their hats in Caldwell, Idaho.

Karen, your legacy is stitched into the heart of Idaho rodeo. Welcome to the Hall, cowgirl.
