David Proctor Hayes, DVM

David Proctor Hayes, a dedicated cowboy and equine veterinarian, has made significant contributions to the Idaho rodeo community. Born with a passion for cowboy culture, he began riding at four and worked summers for a dude string outfit near Lake Tahoe. His rodeo journey took a turn when he enrolled in the first Larry Mahan Bronc Riding School in 1968. Although a severe accident cut his rough stock riding career short, he received a silver belly felt hat from Larry Mahan, a lasting symbol of his rodeo aspirations.

Determined to deepen his rodeo involvement, David pursued farrier training at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he excelled in horseshoeing and horsemanship. He advanced his skills by teaching at Cal Poly Pomona and shoeing racehorses under Fred Snedden at Santa Anita racetrack.

David’s rodeo career flourished as he competed in major California-style 5, 6, and 10 steer roping events. He refined his skills through roping schools with Jim Rodriguez and Leo Camarillo and practiced in local jackpots with influential team ropers like Don Beasley and Kim Burke.

In the late 1970s, David and his wife, Robin, traveled to Southwest states for rodeos, with Robin competing in the WPRA. David’s commitment to rodeo extended into his veterinary career, where he assisted rodeo athletes with medical care and became an on-call rodeo vet at various Idaho events.

In Idaho, David’s involvement in the rodeo community continued as he volunteered at local rodeos and junior rodeo associations. His unwavering support for the rodeo lifestyle and his role in sustaining the sport make him a deserving inductee into the Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame.
