Joni James Smith

Class of 2018

Prior to becoming the only mother/daughter team to wear the Miss Rodeo Crown, Joni was 3rd runner up to the National High School  Rodeo Queen in 1984, Miss College Rodeo in 1987 (which the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association does not have a queen anymore).  Along with queen competitions, Joni also competed in several rodeo events.  She was the 1984 Idaho High School All-Around Cowgirl and went on to a higher level of competition on her black horse Joe to win the Idaho Cowboys Association Champion Barrel Racer in 1985.

Miss Rodeo America in 1990, Joni James Smith has gone on to represent the Idaho rodeo community well. Married to 1998 World Champion Steer Wrestler Louisiana native, Mike Smith, she is the proud mother of four children: Callen (23), Naomi (20), Cole (15), and Nykell (12). With her bachelor’s degree in teaching science she worked as an 8th grade science teacher for several years. Earning a master’s of education in school counseling from Louisiana State University in 1999, she has worked as a high school counselor in the state of Louisiana and Idaho. She loves to serve others and gives back to the community by working with students in the guidance office or classroom. Her past Jerome and Wendell students frequently follow her on social media. She has earned her National School Counseling Certification and is a member of the American School Counselor’s Association. Some of her pastimes include running marathons, operating a furniture remodeling business, reading, and chasing around her kids. She maintains her farming status and rodeo heritage in a suburban area through chasing around three chickens in a homemade coop and a dog. Joni Smith now resides in Lake Charles, Louisiana making frequent visits to her beloved home state of Idaho.
