Leavell, Lonnie

Class of 2021

In 1954 Lonnie attended the first Idaho State High School Rodeo in Salmon, Idaho winning 1st in the Calf Roping and 2nd in the Bareback riding. Being a first-place winner, he was sponsored to attend the National High School Finals, where he placed in the Bareback riding.

Lonnie later managed the family-owned Vale Livestock Auction moving it from the 10th to the 3rd largest livestock auction in the state. During that time, they supported and furnished stock to the local 4H and rodeos at no cost.

In 1988 Lonnie returned home to Gooding to go into partnership with his dad operating as LeaVell Cattle company who has been a great supporter of youth rodeo.

In 2009, Lonnie was inducted into what was known as the “Cowboy Reunion and Hall of Fame”. After the death of organizer Al Gorrell in 2010, Lonnie recognized the need to formally organize what is now called the Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame, Inc.

On May 6, of 2013, The Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame was formed as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization by Lonnie and his wife Charmy.

December 2019 after approximately 8 years of leadership Lonnie retired as President of the IRHF and remains on the board of Directors.
