Wilson Pate: Rodeo Legend

Wilson Pate, born in Texas, faced early challenges as his family moved to Montana, then to Idaho. Determined from a young age, Wilson rode calves after school, leading to his first major victory with a calf riding win at the Last Chance Stampede in Helena, Montana.

By fourteen, despite weighing just 98 pounds, Wilson made headlines at the Gooding RCA Rodeo with the help of a notary public to compete. He soon became the Rocky Mountain Region All-Around Cowboy and the National Reserve All-Around Champion in 1970.

In 1973, Wilson excelled at the Eastern Idaho Rodeo Association, earning titles in Bull Riding, All-Around, and Reserve Bull Riding, along with the Reserve Bulldogging Champion title. He repeated his All-Around Championship in 1976 and claimed Bull Riding and All-Around titles with the Idaho Cowboy Association.

Wilson’s influence extended beyond Idaho, with thirteen consecutive All-Around Champion titles in the California Cowboys Rodeo Association and recognition as the Intermountain Rodeo Association’s Rookie All-Around Cowboy. He was also a five-time All-Around Cowboy and a state high school All-Around Champion for three years.

His National High School Rodeo achievements included All-Around Cowboy and Saddle Bronc Champion in 1966, and Saddle Bronc Champion in 1967. His commitment continued through Rick’s College and his involvement in the Red Bluff Rodeo.

Wilson Pate’s induction into the Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame celebrates his outstanding career and lasting impact on the sport.
