Small, Butch

Class of 2022

Butch was born and raised outside of DuBois Idaho, in Small Idaho on Small Ln on the Small Ranch. He is a hard-working cowboy rancher with lots of talent in the Rodeo Arena. He went to the NFR a record 13 times, almost unheard of for a rough stock rider.

Each year a month before the NFR he would run 5 miles a day to be exceptionally fit. He won or placed at nearly every PRCA rodeo from coast to coast and beyond border to border. He won Cheyenne, the “Daddy of them all”. Butch finished in the top 10, ten times in a row at Calgary along with winning go rounds. Butch held a record in the Wilderness circuit for winning the most top 15 finishes in the Saddle bronc riding. The money that was won was always returned to the Small ranch that has been in his family for five generations, since 1860.

Winston Bruce said, “in every era 4 bronc riders will dominate”, Butch was identified as one of these because of his consistency.

It was said by some that Butch is a true horse whisperer. Butch will always be a cowboy with true grit.
